I spent about 100 hours putting it together.
I'm super proud of how it turned out.
It's my gift to you for being a supporter of this newsletter.
Everybody writes.
Emails, texts, sales copy, video scripts.
Learning it not only makes you a better writer, but also a better thinker.
Here are 2 simple lessons that have had the biggest impact on me...
I remember this story striking a chord with me years ago when I first heard it.
I realize many of you have probably seen this—but it's a great reminder of the importance of setting priorities in our lives.
If you don't feel like watching the video, the story goes like this:
The jar = your life
The rocks = The biggest and most important things you have going on
The pebbles = Things that matter, but you could live without
The sand = the unimportant things that fill up time/space
If you start by putting sand in the jar—you won’t have space for the rocks and pebbles.
Losing sight of your priorities can lead to your big goals being buried by small, meaningless pursuits.
Always make room for your rocks.
It can be hard to get perspective when we’re so close to everything in our lives. The pebbles might seem like rocks, the sand might be overflowing. It’s important to step back once in a while. Take time to reflect on the priorities in your life.
“If you have more than three priorities, you don't have any,”
—Jim Collins
Part of choosing your rocks is choosing what you’re willing to sacrifice
No one has life figured out. Situations change. Priorities change.
Sometimes you’ll have to drop a few pebbles, or scoop out some sand.
That’s part of being human.
There’s one other thing in the jar we didn't mention—air. Leave yourself some space to breathe.
You can't buy more time.
But you can get more of it by changing your lifestyle.
This thread from Dan lays out 5 tests which are strong indicators of how long you'll live.
(Don't worry, he also shows how to improve them)
The thread has a lot of videos, so I'm not going to summarize it here.
These tests are adapted from the book Built to Move by Kelly and Juliet Starrett.
Which I highly recommend you check it out.
TL;DR:
The Think Day is a practice inspired by Bill Gates' Think Week. It involves setting aside a day each month or quarter dedicated to deep thinking, reflection, and personal growth.
To have a successful Think Day, follow these steps:
