3 powerful razors for making better decisions in life

This week's newsletter is brought to you by the number 3.

Ok, not really.

But everything this week seemed to come in threes, so I leaned into it.

Starting with 3 powerful decision-making razors I've been obsessed with lately:

1. The Nostalgia Razor:

"The purpose of life is to experience things for which you will later experience nostalgia." — @fed_speak

I think about this a lot.

Spend as much of your time in the present doing activities that will provide you with nostalgia in the future.

2. The Best Story Razor

"If you're split between two paths, pick the one with the better story. At the end of your life, it's all you're gonna have left anyways." — Alex Hormozi

This one’s especially useful if you’re hesitating on something that feels risky.

When there’s a chance you might fail, it’s still a win because you'll either succeed, or walk away with a good story to tell.

3. The Invested vs. Spent Razor

"Time is either invested or spent.
Invested time = actions that compound:
• Reading
• Physical activity
• Mindfulness
• Relationship building
Spent time = actions that don’t.
When choosing what to do, prioritize investing time, not spending it."
Sahil Bloom

When in doubt, choose the action that compounds.

Simple as that.

3 tools that have made me significantly more productive

You guys know I’m a productivity junkie.

I love being the guinea pig who tests new tools and techniques, then shares the winners with you.

Well good news.

I’ve recently found not one, not two, but three tools that have earned a (semi) permanent spot in my system.

I think you'll get a lot of value out of them too:

1. TickTick (task management app)

I firmly believe everyone should have some kind of task management system. After being a Todoist diehard for years, I finally decided to shake things up, and I have no regrets.

TickTick is a super versatile task manager that seamlessly integrates across platforms.

A few of my favorite features:

  • Natural language input (e.g., “Call Sam tomorrow at 3pm” auto-schedules correctly)
  • Versatile mobile widgets so I can see (and check off) tasks from my iPhone home screen
  • Built-in habit tracker with detailed stats.

2. Intelligent Change Productivity Planner

Apps are great, but I also love having some kind of analog aspect to my daily system.

I’ve cycled through a few planners, but this one’s the clear winner.

My favorite thing to do is block out my day in the "Daily Planning" section and then use the "notes" section to review what stood out for each block.

3. Kitchen Safe Timed Lock Box

I'm 10x more productive when I don't touch my phone in the morning.

Rather than relying on my finite supply of willpower, I use this box to remove the option altogether.

My phone goes in here every night before bed, and it doesn’t open until 9am the next day (after my first deep work session).

Speaking of things that make me more productive.

Shortform is an indispensable part of my learning system.

It helps me revisit big ideas, refresh key takeaways, and actually apply what I’ve learned from nonfiction books—without rereading 300 pages.

These are handwritten book summaries.

Crafted by real people who know how to distill complex ideas into something clear and actionable (no AI fluff).

The library is massive (1,000+ books), but I recommend starting with one of these three:

A must-read article from Justin Welsh - My complete $10M journey (all 23 steps)

To sum up this article in one sentence:

The most knowledge per word of anything I've read this year.

If you don’t know Justin, he’s built a $10M+ one-person business from scratch: entirely online, without a team, and with zero paid ads.

What I love most about him—he holds nothing back. No vague advice. No gatekeeping.

If you have any interest in building an online business, this is one of the most valuable breakdowns you’ll find.

I’d be doing him a disservice trying to summarize it here.

Just go read it. You won’t regret it.

A game changing way to use ChatGPT

Friends, I'm in love (gasps and cheers).

…with ChatGPT voice mode (collective groan).

Seriously though, I feel like this feature is massively underrated.

Here are 3 of my favorite use cases:

While cooking: This is a total game changer. Anytime I’m making a new recipe, I keep a voice chat open so I can ask questions as I go—substitutions, timing, technique, whatever I need. And if you want it to feel like Hell's Kitchen you can tell it to speak with a British accent and hurl obscenities at you.
While travelling: I used this in a museum in Amsterdam to learn more about the paintings I was seeing. It was like having a personal tour guide in my pocket.
While learning something new: I use it to practice Spanish by holding full conversations. I’ll ask it to speak slowly, correct my grammar, or quiz me on vocab mid-walk. It’s way less intimidating than speaking to a real person, and way more effective than Duolingo.

My prediction:

Within a couple years, everyone will be chatting with AI constantly (not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing).

😂
